Coby King is an experienced public affairs professional specializing in governmental advocacy and strategic and crisis communications. Mr. King's combined legal, political and communications experience serves as the foundation for his involvement in developing effective public affairs strategies. He is a veteran political campaign strategist, and has been responsible for organizing grassroots coalitions and formulating political strategy. Mr. King is also an attorney, expert in government practice law. His specialty in advocacy is in the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and the County of Los Angeles, though he has strong contacts throughout Southern California and in Sacramento.
Mr. King helps clients from both the private and public sectors achieve their business or policy goals through governmental advocacy and communications strategies. Mr. King is currently a public affairs consultant to a variety of clients, assisting on media, political, and community relations. Among his clients present and past are Adelphia Communications, Catellus Urban Development Group, the Playa Vista development in West Los Angeles, the L.A. Redistricting Commission for the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the Jewish Public Affairs Committee of California, a consortium of community relations organizations, 2-1-1 LA County, the county's leading information and referral agency, and Si-Nor, Inc., a international waste hauling firm. King also provides advocacy and real estate entitlement services for his work for Yum! Brands, Inc., a Fortune 500 company that owns and operates the KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and other quick serve restaurant franchises.
Actively involved in the political arena, King currently serves as President of the Van Nuys Airport Citizens Advisory Council, serving currently as an appointee of City Councilman Tony Cardenas. He also serves on the MTA's San Fernando Valley Service Sector Governance Council, representing the City of Los Angeles, serving as chair from 2003 to 2006. He also serves Secretary of the Board of the Transportation and Land Use Collaborative of Southern California, and on various Democratic Party committees, including the State Central Committee and State Executive Board. He also served as a member of the Board of Commissioners of the City of Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency from 2000 to 2002, and on the California Council on Criminal Justice from 2002 through 2004, having been appointed by former Speaker Robert Hertzberg.
Prior to forming CKC in 1999, King was a vice president at Rogers & Associates, focusing on issues management and crisis communications. From May to December of 2001, Mr. King also served as president of CrossPoint Advisors, part of the Kosmont Companies, where he performed similar duties to those at CKC. Prior to R&A, Mr. King was an attorney at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips. He began his legal career at the international law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, followed by service as counsel to then-chairman of the Board of Equalization (and now Congressman) Brad Sherman.
